Description
The Ellis Collection is a nod to Ellis Island, a beacon of hope to millions for a better life. This original Ivey Abitz design is made just for you in New York.
Get to Know Ellis
The Ellis Shirt celebrates the symbolism and significance of Ellis Island. It reminds us of what millions of immigrants have given up in order to come to the United States. It reminds us of their resilience and hope for a better life.
The Ellis Collection also reminds us that Ivey Abitz is able to create clothing that celebrates our uniqueness because we live in a country that seeks to honour the ideals of independence. For that we are grateful, and we want to wear these ideals in everyday life.
Our inspiration came from the shape of the actual island, as well as the architectural details in the buildings, that welcomed those coming here for the first time. Curves and points adorn the bottom hem of the front and back of the frock. These details echo many other designs in the collection, especially the Bartholdi, Liberté, and Bedloe designs.
Subtle darting at the chest and a relaxed drape through the waist creates a comfortable silhouette. A wonderful a-line drape gives you ease of movement. Wraparound side ties give you the option of slightly cinching in the waist at the back of the frock or bringing the ties around to the front to create a belt-like look. If you plan to only wear the shirt with a straighter and looser silhouette, you may order it without side ties.
Its tall collar is adorned with pin tucks on the inside and outside. It can be a relaxed standing collar, or it can lay flat. The look is up to you.
Fabric
The shirt can go in many different directions based on the fabric that you choose. Lightweight cotton voiles and silk chiffons give an ethereal layer that can be worn during the hottest spring and summer days. A woolen or textured cotton can give you a layer of warmth during the autumn and winter that looks and feels like a long vest. Striped, textured, and plaid weaves lend themselves well to this sleeveless addition to an ensemble.
If you’d like the Ellis Shirt’s collar to be mainly a standing collar, we suggest choosing fabrics that are a bit thicker than cotton voile — like our linens and lightweight woolens. Fabrics like our silk chiffons lend themselves more to a collar that lays flat, but a tighter weave like a linen will allow it to stand — especially if you use a bit of spray starch on it.
Ensemble Suggestions
The Ellis Shirt was designed to be worn with other designs in the Ellis collection, as well as the Liberté Frock, Ellis Shirt, Bedloe Frock, and under the Ellis Jacket and Liberté Jacket. Due to its versatile design details, the Ellis can also be worn over most of our base layering frocks, skirts, and trousers.
