Get to Know Nan

Nan is short for Ananda, which means divine joy in Sanskrit.

The subtleties in the design is what makes it delightful. Look closely, and there is a circular sewing pattern on the collar, top of pockets, sleeve edges, ends of side ties, and bottom hem of the duster coat. When we sew these details onto the design, we fold the fabric to give it texture and depth. We keep this artful detail in place with circular stitches. 

Side ties are optional. We recommend them for adjusting the shape and fit of the duster in an instant. 

Side seam pockets are sizable and practical. Back in the day, women were not allowed to have pockets. We celebrate women’s autonomy and equality with bold and purposeful pockets in each and every Nan. Being treated with respect is partly how we achieve joy on this earth.

Fabric Ideas 

A solid hued Nan really features the intricacies of the fine stitching and texture in the folded details. Choosing a stripe or dotted weave will create some interesting visual detail as the pattern undulates in and out of the folds. Choose a lighter weight weave for an indoor shirt. A thicker weave will give you a lovely outdoor jacket. Embrace the versatility of the design and get one for indoors and one for outdoors. Then, wear them together. Mix them with your other IA garments. You’ll enjoy them for years to come.
