Animal Saints Rescue Society Success Story

Featured Animal Saint: Saint

Meet Saint, an Animal Saint rescued by Animal Saints Rescue Society. Saint was one of the most extreme cases helped by Animal Saints. Found as a stray, he was covered in dreadlocks and hair caked to his legs. He could barely move, and he was not eating. At only a year old, it appeared he had never been groomed, he lived in a crate for the first months of his life, and he was surviving by eating his own feces and drinking his own urine.

Animal control gave Animal Saints a deadline of picking him up by 1 p.m. on a Thursday afternoon or they would humanely euthanize him. Animal Saints knew they had to give him a chance. Cynthia Ivey Abitz, the director of Animal Saints, coordinated a rescue relay with various volunteers to get him the medical care and transport needed. Saint arrived to the Animal Saints Sanctuary in the hopes of giving him the time and space needed to recuperate.

Diagnosed with leptospirosis, a highly contagious infection, Saint lived in quarantine for many days as he recuperated. Cynthia oversaw his daily care. Using gloves and a change of clothes for every visit to avoid infection, she saw him through the darkest days to show him love and affection for the first time in his life.

A year later, Saint is a permanent resident of the Animal Saints Sanctuary while his renal disease is closely monitored. He now loves people and greets everyone with a tail wag and a happy greeting. The name Saint was given to him because of his capacity to forgive and love people, despite all of the abuse and neglect he endured before being saved by Animal Saints Rescue Society. Dogs like Saint inspire everyone at Animal Saints Rescue Society to help the most innocent and vulnerable souls here on earth.
